History is made today, one that none of the over 7 billion inhabitants of the world has ever witnessed.

At this very moment, 20.00 GMT, the doors at his Summer residence Castle Gandolfo have been closed and the Swiss Guards withdrawn as Pope Benedict XVI has officially resigned his post. He will henceforth be known as 'Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI' or 'Roman Pontiff Emeritus Benedict XVI', he would also be addressed as 'Your Holiness' and be referred to as 'His Holiness Benedict XVI'

He has given up his trademark 'red' shoes (pictured above). While he will retain the white cassock, his official seal and ring known as 'fisherman's ring' (see picture below) will also be destroyed to mark the end of his papacy.

Healthy male volunteers, 25-40 years of age, to take part in a clinical study involving nasal administration of cocaine. Medical and dental students will not be enrolled to this study.

What will happen?

After cocaine administration, repeated biological samples (blood, urine, hair, sweat, oral fluid) will be taken to compare and investigate how cocaine and its metabolites are spread through the human body.

A part-time Business Administration Student of Lagos State Polytechnic, Miss Olayinde Bournes, 22, has allegedly been beaten to death by her boyfriend, Abuchi Cyril.
The incident happened Thursday at Shorinmade Street, Aguda-Ogba area of Lagos State, southwest Nigeria.
According to Miss Titilayo Fagbamila, friend of the deceased girl, she always complained to her that her boyfriend, Abuchi always beat her at the slightest provocation.
She said that on Thursday when the tragedy occurred, Abuchi invited Olayinde to his house along Shorinmade Street, to see his travel documents.
Titilayo said nobody knew what happened when the lovers were together but it is believed that they had a misunderstanding which may have led to a fight.

Papal resignation linked to inquiry into 'Vatican gay officials'.

A potentially explosive report has linked the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI to the discovery of a network of gay prelates in the Vatican, some of whom – the report said – were being blackmailed by outsiders.

The pope's spokesman declined to confirm or deny the report, which was carried by the Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica.

The paper said the pope had taken the decision on 17 December that he was going to resign – the day he received a dossier compiled by three cardinals delegated to look into the so-called "Vatileaks" affair.

Last May Pope Benedict’s butler, Paolo Gabriele, was arrested and charged with having stolen and leaked papal correspondence that depicted the Vatican as a seething hotbed of intrigue and infighting. 

According to La Repubblica, the dossier comprising “two volumes of almost 300 pages – bound in red” had been consigned to a safe in the papal apartments and would be delivered to the pope’s successor upon his election.The newspaper said the cardinals described a number of factions, including one whose members were “united by sexual orientation”.

President GEJ reverses decision to rename UNILAG

President Goodluck Jonathan has reversed his decision to change the name of  University of Lagos which he renamed Moshood Abiola University in a broadcast to mark the 2012 Democracy Day.

Students of UNILAG protested the name change and some individuals spoke for and against it. In a move  that will end numerous litigations received on this case, a court recently ruled that the change was illegal.

Dana crash: Victims’ relatives get N418.75m insurance claims

Relatives of 85 out of the 153 victims of the Dana Air crash of June 3, 2012 in Iju area of Lagos State have been paid N418.75m insurance claims.

The Managing Director, Prestige Assurance Plc, the lead insurer of the aircraft, Mr. Anand Mittal, who said this in an exclusive interview with our correspondent in Lagos on Tuesday, said 83 claimants got N4.67m each, which represents 30 per cent of the total claims they are entitled to, while two others, who had completed the documentation processes, including submission of letter of administration, got N15.57m full insurance settlement each.

“We have paid an initial liability for 85 relatives; two of them with letters of administration and had done complete documentation received their full compensation. We are ready to pay the balance to the remaining claimants as soon as they complete their documentations too,” Mittal said.

On why many of the relatives had not been able to collect the balance of 70 per cent of the claims, he said this might be due to their inability to get letters of administration of the deceased’s estates easily as it was a criterion to accessing the balance.

The Prestige Assurance boss gave an assurance that the firm would pay N15.57m or $100,000, which was the internationally acceptable standard, to the relatives of each deceased passenger.

According to him, 30 per cent of the risk is domiciled in Nigeria, while the remaining is reinsured abroad.

Sahara Reporters: Nigerian Pop Singer Susan 'Goldie' Harvey Died Of Stroke-Pathologists

Medical sources at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital have revealed that Big Brother Africa singing sensation Oluwabimpe Susan Harvey aka "Goldie" died of Intracranial hemorrhage as a result of hypertension.
Several of the sources told Saharareporters exclusively that Mrs. Harvey had bleeding in her brain which could be attributed to hypertension.
The confirmation put to rest earlier speculation by her managers and fans that she died of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) as a result of her long journey from the Grammy's Award in the US.
One of our sources said that they could not immediately determine if drugs consumption triggered the excessive amount of bleeding that killed her as it was rare for someone her age to die of stroke.

The medical source stated that a toxicology test would be required to find out if her death was caused by drugs, a process that would likely take months as conclusive tests could only be conducted outside Nigeria.
The pop singer died on Valentine day shortly after returning from the US.
The cause of death has been a source of speculation and resentment as her fans, and friends objected to suggestions that she might have died due to drug addiction.
