Buhari fires NIMASA boss

President Muhammadu Buhari has sacked the Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Patrick Akpobolokemi. The special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, confirmed this in a statement on Thursday.

''The termination of Akpobolokemi's appointment is with immediate effect, he is to hand over the management of NIMASA to the most senior in the agency who will remain in charge until a new director general is appointed''.

No reason was given for the sack, it is believed to be connected with the involvement of NIMASA in the award of pipeline surveillance contracts to ex-militia groups. Before the former president left office, he renewed the contracts worth about N9 billion but President Buhari who isn't comfortable with the arrangement, revoked the contracts. Before Akpobolokemi's appointment, he was a lecturer at the Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island in Bayelsa state.
